There are only a few musicians that I would gladly travel to see their live performance. St. Vincent is on the top of that list. If any of her tours ever skipped over Portland, for whatever reason, I would gladly hop on a plane to see her perform almost anywhere. That’s exactly what I did in 2010 when I flew out to Denver to see her. (Side note: I met her after the concert and she gave me my first whiskey out of her Dixie cup. #truestory.) I love going to concerts, especially when the artist is talented enough to sing live while also putting on an amazing show – St. Vincent does both. Tonight, she’s playing at the Keller Auditorium here in Portland, and I have some pretty sweet tickets for the orchestra section right near the stage.
St. Vincent has been my all time favorite artist for over a decade. Every album she releases is absolutely delightful. She’s an amazing artist both musically and in how she changes her appearance for every album. I’d describe her look for her newest album, Masseduction, as intense future-goth, colorful goddess, and neon queen. The most powerful song on the album is “Pills”. It delivers a harsh message of the sad reality that we are facing in our new age of big pharma – seriously, check out the brilliant video below. The first single for the album, “New York”, is nothing short of fantastic. The music video is a masterpiece brought to life through absolutely stunning imagery and bright contrasting colors. Pro-tip: take an edible, wait an hour, and press play. If you haven’t heard of St. Vincent, I implore you to check out her newest album. Three of her new songs are posted here and you can scroll down if you want a list of some of my favorite songs.
I’ll see you tonight, Annie… and if you’re taking requests, I’d love to hear the following songs: Young Lover, Slow Disco, New York, Pills, Los Ageless, Cheerleader, Birth in Reverse, Cruel, Year of the Tiger, Actor out of Work, Laughing with a Mouth of Blood, Black Rainbow, and Your Lips are Red. XOXOXO, good luck tonight!
