For the last decade, Sondre Lerche (one of my all time favorite musicians) has released a cover of a popular song around Christmas time as a gift for his fans. This year, Sondre Lerche covers Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande. In an unsuspected twist, he translated her lyrics into Norwegian, and it works all too well.
The annual (9th? 10th?) holiday present to you simply had to be “thank u, next” this year. A lot of people guessed it already — I hadn’t really decided between “No tears left to cry” or this one when I sat down with my guitar the night before last to feel out the vibes. I loved them both the moment I heard them, but the explicit message of gratitude and acceptance in “thank u, next” swiftly inspired me to reimagine the lyrics to fit my own experiences – and for once, I felt this would need to happen in Norwegian (mostly). All of this was recorded, mixed and mastered by Matias Tellez in Bergen, Norway between the hours of 11am and 8pm on December 22, 2018 – I sing and play the guitar, Matias plays everything else. Please enjoy, stay warm and peaceful this Christmas, and beyond. More love in 2019. SL
While I would have absolutely loved to have heard him cover No Tears Left to Cry, I’ll be 100% content with Thank U, Next in NorwEnglish. The way he croons while adding an element of ambient chill to this otherwise poppy song is a wonderful delight. His rendition has quickly taken a top spot in my “that high life” Spotify playlist.
Curious about some of the other songs Sondre’s covered in the past? Check out a few of my favorites below, including his take on songs by Sia, Beyoncé, and Miley Cyrus. Hey Sondre, where on Earth is your cover of Lewis Takes Off His Shirt? I can’t find it anywhere!!! Oh, and speaking of taking off shirts, check out this photo of me with Sondre and a slight nip-slip or go watch Serenading in the Trenches.
