I have a huge collection of Christmas music that I bring to work each year. My collection is super eclectic with plenty of amazing and awesome songs mixed in. Of course, there are some really quirky, weird, and down-right awful tracks too. I mean, with that much Christmas music you’re bound to get a few duds, right? Each year, I load up my Zune with all of my Christmas music, (yep, I totally have a Zune) and I start playing it at work. Once the randomness is set into motion I get ready to select the featured song for that year – Now before you go on thinking that the featured song is going to be something amazing and good, you should know how the featured song is selected. Out of the thousands of tracks that I play, the featured song is picked when someone calls out: “what the hell are we listening to?” Then we celebrate by listening to that song at least once per hour. OMG, I love this game!!
Here are my favorite featured songs that make you say “what the hell?”
2009 – Lady Gaga – Christmas Tree
Stephanie L. was the TM that selected this marvelous masterpiece. I still consider it to be one of my favorite featured Christmas songs. I’ll never forget how we’d put this on repeat for several hours while turning up the volume and dancing like Lady Gaga – I think I have a video of us somewhere 😉
2010 – Louis Armstrong – Zat You Santa Claus?
Kevin M. made this a favorite almost immediately after it started playing. He’d shout out “Zat You Santa Claus?” all Louis Armstrongy. Then we’d sing off key and everyone would laugh.
2011 – Chaka Khan – Do You Hear What I Hear?
I’ll never forget the face Lacy B. made when Chaka started singing towards the end of the song. She literally said “What the Hell?” six times. Seriously, fast forward to 1:26 – hilarious and it just keeps getting better!
2012 – Lady Gaga – Christmas Tree
Yep, Stephanie L. and I decided we needed this gem in our lives for one more season.
2013 – Sufjan Stevens – Christmas Unicorn
Ali E. picked the featured song this year. I think the title alone helps it become a winner. Well, that and the fact that it’s a twelve minute song. Chances are it was picked solely based on how long it is playing. After about minute 9, she exclaimed “how is this song still playing?!”
Can you think of any Christmas songs that are guilty pleasures?
